Temple
Sacred Shrine
Maa Nayekali Temple stands as a timeless beacon of faith and devotion on the scenic coastline of Purba Medinipur, nestled in the village of Purba Mukundapur near the historic Sankarpur Fishing Harbour. The presiding deity, Maa Nayekali, is a revered form of Goddess Kali — the all-powerful, all-compassionate Divine Mother — worshipped for generations as the guardian of the coastal villages and protector of all who venture into the waters of the Bay of Bengal.
The name Nayekali holds deep significance in the local tradition. As the "leader among the Kalis" — the one who guides, guards, and protects — Maa Nayekali embodies the fierce yet nurturing aspect of Shakti. Fishermen departing from Sankarpur Harbour have long offered prayers at this sacred shrine, seeking the Mother's blessings before setting sail, trusting her divine protection over the vast and unpredictable sea. This intimate bond between the deity and the coastal fishing community has made the temple not merely a place of worship, but the very heart and soul of this coastal settlement.
The temple is situated on the Digha–Mandarmani Marine Drive, one of the most scenic coastal corridors of West Bengal, flanked by the natural beauty of the Bay of Bengal. Surrounded by swaying casuarina groves and the eternal sound of the sea, the spiritual atmosphere here is deeply moving. Beside the Nayekali Bridge on the marine drive, the temple serves as a landmark both of faith and geography — a point of arrival and blessing for pilgrims and travellers alike passing through Digha, Tajpur, and Mandarmani.
Worship follows the rich traditions of Bengali Shaktism. The temple observes daily rituals from early dawn to evening, with special pujas, floral offerings, and aartis marking the sacred hours. Major festivals such as Kali Puja, Durga Puja, and Navratri are celebrated here with immense devotion, drawing large congregations of worshippers. During these occasions, the temple resonates with the chanting of mantras, the fragrance of incense, and the light of countless diyas — filling every heart with peace, surrender, and the grace of the Divine Mother.
